Yorkshire Open Olympic Weightliftng Competition

On Saturday I went to Mytholmroyd in Yorkshire to compete in the Yorkshire and North East Counties Open Weightlifting Championships, officiated by BWLA (the British Weight Lifting Association). There were 6 of us in total from Crossfit, including 2 others who were lifting in their debut competition too.

If you’re read my last post on Olympic Weightlifting warmups, you’ll know that I was hoping to qualify for the BWLA British Championships. I needed a total of 175kg to qualify, well I won’t spoil it, here’s the video so you can see what happened.

I have to say, I’m slightly disappointed, but it goes to show I’m getting close to the 75 and 100kg I need, and I still have the Northern Masters in Feb 2009 to qualify, which is at Mytholmroyd again. Things I need to work on:

  • Keeping the bar much closer to my legs on the first pull.
  • Hopefully that will fix my erroneous forward jump.
  • Keeping my bum down and shoulders up on the first pull, so they both rise together.
  • Catching both the Snatch and Clean lower in the squat.
  • Not dipping so far on the jerk.

That lot should keep me going for a few months!

    Hello Colin,
    Well done.
You were a bit unlucky on the 75 kg snatch. It was a lock out but I’ve seen worse given. Nice PB on 95kg, very solid, looked easy. Also the 100 kg was a good attempt, you’ve got a bad habit of leaving your hips back a bit to receive the jerk and you didn’t do it on the 100kg which might have cost you the lift. It needs fixing but not during the third attempt in competition!
You’re right about the things to work on. The key for you is the third point about keeping your bum down and shoulders up, this should keep the bar close to your shins. Maybe some medium weight dead lifts (concentrating on technique) and some hyper extensions or good mornings to strengthen your back and hamstrings up?
You could have got the total you needed with a bit of luck and I’m sure you will achieve it on your next time out.

Yeah, bad luck Col – you were really close there – never mind I am sure you will nail them at the Northern.
Just out of interest – what are “good mornings”?

Thanks Giles, I intend on having a chat to you about coming up with a proper program of work. I would have been down the gym tonight, but I have a stinking cold and am only good for ice cream and bed!

Cheers Jane, these are good mornings:

    Good Morning

Hey Colin, sorry I’ve not been around much recently.

Well done on achieving 2nd place. Those lifts looked very demanding.

I am nowhere near the lifts you are doing so I am a wee bit ‘bowled over’ by you right now!

    Cheers Steve.
